Deception Complex Fire Update - August 24, 2014
Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 4 is managing
the Deception Complex which encompasses approximately 92 fires on the Middle
Fork Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest. The Middle Fork Ranger
District has had five lighting storms starting fires since early July with the
most recent on August 10, 2014.
Helicopters are playing a significant role in the Deception
Complex. On Friday, five helicopters dropped 95,083 gallons of water on the
fires. For the Deception Creek area, this work has kept the fires cooled down
while the indirect firelines are being constructed. On Saturday, the Green Lake
fire spotted outside of the containment lines and helicopters aided ground
crews in keeping the spot fire to just a quarter acre.
Highway 58 drivers will see helicopters flying over the road
with buckets carrying water from the Willamette River. Please do not allow your interest in viewing
this to distract your driving.
Steep terrain, snags, rolling material and poor access are
keeping firefighters from safely working on three fires in the Deception Creek
area. The fire team has been working with cooperators to evaluate tactics for
these fires. Indirect fire lines are being constructed to use if burn out
operations are required. One alternative being evaluated is a phased burn out
operation conducted on portions of the indirect line as dictated by fire
activity.
The incident meteorologist has forecasted a warming and
drying trend with potential for an east wind on Tuesday. These weather
conditions will cause the fire activity to increase.
