A
unified command between Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 4 and
Oregon Department of Forestry is managing the Deception Complex encompassing many
lightning-caused fires on the Middle Fork Ranger District of the Willamette
National Forest. The Middle Fork Ranger District has had five lighting storms
starting fires since early July with the most recent on August 10, 2014. Yesterday,
a new fire from the recent storms was identified, quickly lined, and contained.
Communities
from Oakridge/Westfir downstream to the Eugene area experienced smoky conditions
yesterday. A column of smoke from the Deception Fire grew during the afternoon
as the temperature soared into the 90’s.
The increased activity has been expected by the fire team due to record
high temperatures and low relative humidity. The fire remains west of Deception
Creek and has been burning away from populated areas. Residents can expect to
see smoke throughout the day on Wednesday and for the remainder of the summer.
Five
heavy-lift helicopters are assisting crews and keeping the fire cool by
dropping water on hot spots.
Weather
conditions today will be similar to yesterday, with temperatures in the 90’s
and relative humidity less than 20%. Today should be the end of the extreme hot
weather as cooler temperatures are predicted.
